An update to edge rusher Tyree Wilson’s knee injury in Week 1 is good news

Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Tyree Wilson is facing a big year in his second season with the team, struggling in his rookie campaign after being selected No. 7 overall. And now early on, he dodged a potentially bad injury.

During Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Tyree Wilson left the game with a knee injury and was spotted in the locker room with a brace. There was concern that it could be a major injury for Wilson but on Monday, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Tyree Wilson’s injury is not believed to be a long-term injury and that his knee is still structurally sound. That’s great news for a Raiders pass rush that really needs to get it going after the Week 1 loss.

Tyree Wilson wasn’t awful as a rookie, recording 3.5 sacks with two tackles for loss and eight QB hits but the production needed to be a little higher for a top 10 pick. The Raiders are hoping that Wilson can figure things out and be a good compliment to Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkens on that defensive line.

With Malcolm Koonce on injured reserve, the role that Wilson will play is even bigger now this season.

Will Raiders look for more pass rush help now with Tyree Wilson injury?

While Wilson’s knee injury likely won’t keep him out for the rest of the season, he’s expected to miss some time. In his press conference on Monday, head coach Antonio Pierce did hint that the Raiders are looking for help saying that general manager Tom Telesco is ‘working on’ bringing in depth options at defensive end.

That shouldn’t be surprising to anyone with Tyree Wilson’s injury now.  But the options are a little limited.

Right now, the best option out there is probably Yannick Ngaukoue, a 29-year-old pass rusher who spent last season with the Chicago Bears before suffering a season-ending injury. He had four sacks in 13 games with the Bears.
