On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders announced they signed a familiar quarterback in the preseason. The Raiders are preparing for an important contest against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, in their second game of the preseason.

Head coach Antonio Pierce recently said he will decide on the Week 1 starter at quarterback following the game on Saturday. He said the Raiders have enough on tape to make the decision.

As previously discussed on LVSN, Pierce said he was impressed by how Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew played against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday:

“Yeah, it was good. Good reps there for Aidan. Backed up, got us drove all the way down the length of the field. It was close there, was thinking about going for the fourth down, negative play, we kicked a field goal,” head coach Antonio Pierce said post-game, via team transcripts.

“And then Gardner came in, three good drives. Really for both quarterbacks, all four possessions led to points on the board for the Raiders. That was positive. There’s a lot of things obviously we can learn from it.”

The Raiders made a move on Tuesday that won’t threaten O’Connell of Minshew for the starting job. But they’ll get some much-needed preseason depth and a veteran who could be an asset on the practice squad this fall.

The Raiders signed Nathan Peterman

Per a statement by the Raiders, the team is bringing back Nathan Peterman:

Entering his eighth NFL season, Peterman returns for a second stint with the Silver and Black, having played for the Raiders in four seasons from 2018-21. Peterman was most recently with New Orleans, signing with the Saints in March after spending the previous two years with the Chicago Bears.

Peterman has played in 15 career games with five starts over seven seasons, completing 85-of-160 pass attempts for 712 yards and four touchdowns. In two years with Chicago, he played in five games with one start, totaling 139 yards and one touchdown on 14-of-25 passing. Signed to the Raiders practice space in December 2018, he spent four years with the Silver and back, seeing action in two regular season games.

Originally selected by Buffalo in the fifth round (171st overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh, Peterman played two years with the Bills and saw action in eight regular season games with four starts.

Peterman is a long shot to make the 53-man roster

Peterman likely won’t make the 53-man roster this fall. But he’ll have a chance to show he still has the tools to make the practice squared if he plays well against the Cowboys, adding another level of intrigue at quarterback for Saturday’s game.
