A few weeks ago it was a logical idea for the Las Vegas Raiders to trade 2023 first-round pick Tyree Wilson. In Week 1, the Raiders are expecting Wilson to play a significant role against the Chargers on Sunday.
On Friday, the Raiders ruled out defensive end Malcolm Koonce for Sunday’s game. Koonce is battling a knee injury.
Las Vegas Raiders DE Tyree Wilson will need to step up in Week 1
Maxx Crosby is penciled in as the Raiders starting defensive end. Janarius Robinson and Wilson will need to help pick up the slack for Koonce against the Chargers.
Per the Raiders website, Wilson said on Friday that he needs to focus on doing his job stopping the run against the Chargers.
“I’ve been practicing for my moment,” Wilson said. “Malcolm is my brother, but it’s the start of the season and I’ve got to go out there and represent like he’d want me to and really just do my job. … We’re playing Raider defense, so you’ve got to be able to stop the run first. Me being on the field, I’ve got to stop the run first and then [earn] the right to rush the passer.”
Wilson can silence the doubters
Wilson recorded 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks for the Raiders last season. He reportedly had a slow start to training camp this year.
Wilson has a chance to quiet the doubters due to Koonce’s injury. If he can stop the run and make a difference in the pass rush early in the regular season, no one will entertain the idea of trading last year’s No. 7 pick before the trade deadline.
