After Saturday’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce plans to name his starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season. Wide receiver Davante Adams is praying whoever Pierce chooses will make the offense work.

Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew showed great promise in the Raiders’ preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. O’Connell started the game, and Minshew is expected to start against the Cowboys.

The Raiders added veteran backup Nathan Peterman to the roster this week. Peterman has a chance to make the practice squad, but the QB1 job is squarely between Minshew and O’Connell.

Davante Adams is praying for success

Adams recently gave his thoughts on the quarterback battle. He agreed with Pierce’s assessment that they are very different quarterbacks. Per Paul Gutierrez with ESPN, Adams said he’s “praying” that they have success this season:

“I mean, they both balled out,” Adams said. “They both did their thing and Gardner came in and picked up where Aidan left off. You can see we’ve got two quarterbacks that are not necessarily the same … the O-line was doing a good job keeping both of those guys clean, as much as possible.

I’ve seen a lot of good so, hopefully, we keep doing that and it’s going to make it hard on [head coach Antonio Pierce] to figure out. But I’m praying for nothing but success for both of them.”

Fortunately, Adams has seen a lot of good. Reports from California during training camp weren’t promising for the Raiders offense. They played better against the Vikings, but their defense won’t be the same test as the Cowboys under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
