On Monday, the Carolina Panthers threw the Las Vegas Raiders a curveball before their matchup in Week 3. The Raiders coaching staff was getting the team prepared to play Bryce Young. However, the Panthers announced Young would be benched in favor of veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.

The No. 1 pick in last year’s draft has been terrible to start the 2024 season. He’s 31/56 passing for 245 yards and three interceptions. He has not thrown a touchdown pass this season. The Panthers believe Dalton gives their team the best chance to beat the Raiders.

The Raiders have to reconsider everything on defense

On Monday, Pierce said the Panthers’ decision to start Dalton would make it a little more difficult for the Raiders’ coaching staff.

“I got to go back to the drawing boards; wasn’t prepared for that one,” Pierce said.

Pierce also has other things on his mind this week besides the Panthers’ starting quarterback.

“We’ve got a lot of things that we need to correct. It was a win yesterday, but there were a lot of things in that first quarter that were ugly, in that first half that were ugly and in that third quarter that were ugly,” Pierce said, per the Associated Press. “We’re not worried about the Panthers. We’ve got to fix the Raiders.”

Dalton, age 36, has played in the NFL for 14 seasons. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Dalton has thrown for 38,511 passing yards, 246 touchdowns, and 144 interceptions. His record is 83-78-2 as a starter.
