Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce provided an update Wednesday on rookie tight end Brock Bowers’ injury. Bowers has been dealing with a foot injury since at least last week. The injury kept him out of the Raiders’ second preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.

Per Ryan Ward with Raiders News Wire, Peirce said Bowers missed Saturday night’s game because of soreness:

“Woke up the other morning with a little foot soreness. … If you are not 100% healthy, you are not going to play.”

The foot injury has lingered into the Raiders’ preparation this week for their final preseason game of the year on Friday night. It doesn’t appear as if Bowers will play against the San Francisco 49ers. Not that the reps would be much help, as Peirce plans to rest Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell, and the rest of the team’s starters against the 49ers.

Bowers has not practiced this week due to the injury. On Wednesday, Pierce told reporters that Bowers missed for “precautionary” reasons.

“Yeah, just precautionary. Got a foot injury, and we just want to protect him,” Pierce said.

The Raiders expect Bowers to play against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 of the regular season on Sept 8.

Bowers caught two passes for 25 yards in the Raiders’ first preseason game of the year when they played the Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders drafted Bowers with the No. 13 overall pick to be an immediate impact player on the field in the regular season.

The injury doesn’t appear to be concerning for Bowers’ prospects in the regular season. Keeping Bowers out of practice and a meaningless preseason game on Friday night will better the chances that he doesn’t further damage his foot before Week 1.
